-
Keep it Simple - Try to keep your Offense/Defense
Simple and Easy for your players to understand. You will find that
you use only a handful of plays 80% of the time
-
Blocking Blocking Blocking - If your
Team can not Block. You will not be successful. Teach your players
to maintain their blocks until they hear the whistle.
-
If you have a Passing Game, Great. If you don't have a Passing Game,
Don't Worry. RUN THE BALL!
-
SWARM - On Defense the name of the
game is SWARM! Teach your Defense to swarm around the ball. The more
players around the ball, the more opportunities you have to grab the
flag!
-
Running Backs should run North to South, not East to West. To avoid
being tackled, many young players run sideline to sideline. Teach
your team to run downfield towards the 1st down marker or End Zone.
-
Focus on what's important. The Kids. There's no National Championship
or Offensive Coordinator of the year awards in Flag Football. This
game is for the kids, not the parents, not the coaches.
-
Your Goals should be Modest. Teach your players the fundamentals
of Football, Show improvement from week to week, Instill in your players
a Love for the Game!
-
Remember, at this age, All the Players and Coaches Should
Have FUN!
-
Make sure you have the proper Emergency Contact information for your
Players.
-
Check the Field before practice/game and make sure there are no Safety
Hazards.
-
Be Ready & Organized - Have your practices mapped out so you will
be able to go right into the next drill without making it up on the
fly.
-
Have a Plan, but be flexible enough to change the Plan if it's not
working. Some things work somedays, some will not. Have a few extra
drills ready. They may be needed.
-
Seek out Volunteers (Parents), you will need them. The More the Better!
-
If the Players do not understand a drill or concept, YOU are explaining
it wrong! Try explaining it another way. If the Players STILL do not
understand a drill or concept, Move On to something else.
-
Do not Overwhelm your Players with Too much or overly complicated
Drills. Break Down concepts/drills into SMALL Manageable Portions.
Young minds can only process so much information.
-
Design your Game Plan (Offense & Defense) around your Team's
Strengths. Don't try to fit a Round Peg into a Square Hole.
-
Remember to Keep Your Sense of Humor. Remember to Keep Your Sanity
- It's Only a Game!
